Top 6 Practical CE and Support Websites for ER Veterinarians

Top 6 Practical CE and Support Websites for ER Veterinarians

Finally! A compilation of veterinary resources for ER veterinarians!

What’s that?

Compilations already exist?

True—Cornell keeps a decent list and VIN even has a “Website of the Week.” But if you’re like me, you probably find most of these lists interesting yet overwhelming, with too many impractical options to sort through. So here’s a list specifically for ER veterinarians to bookmark for those questions you run into in practice every day.

1. VASG | Cost: Free

The Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia Support Group website is loaded. If you haven’t checked it out yet, they have great anesthesia and emergency drug calculators, a thorough guide to anesthesia, dose charts, and tons of other resources.

2. Pet Poison Helpline | Cost: Free

Overseen by the knowledgeable Dr. Justine Lee, the Pet Poison Helpline is quickly becoming the authority on pet poisons. They also offer great webinars if you are into that sort of thing. (Hint: You should be.)

When you get a call from your brother’s girlfriend’s aunt about her dog ingesting a cicada, you can tell her what’s up.

BONUS: While we’re on the topic of toxicology, don’t miss the excellent ASPCA Poisonous Plant Guide.

3. VetHive | Cost: $39 USD per month

When you need a little help from your friends, look no further than this enthusiastic veterinary community, where you can bounce cases off specialists and peers in a collaborative, judgment-free space. In VetHive, members can ask each other for case help, share experiences, and learn together through message boards, live workshops, and weekly RACE-approved CE courses.

4. Clinician’s Brief | Cost: Free

Clinician's Brief has been creating brief, concise clinical resources on a variety of clinical topics, including cardiology, dermatology, emergency medicine, and surgery for over 20 years.

You can create a free account and subscribe to their daily newsletter to stay in the loop on the latest content and get access to their podcast, daily quizzes, and other helpful resources. They’ve also recently launched a new website that’s easier to navigate—and personalize.

5. VETGirl | Cost: $269 per year

VETgirl offers a plethora of free online CE courses, along with a wealth of information on all sorts of topics related to veterinary medicine. Their paid subscription gets you unlimited access to one of the largest CE libraries in the industry. The specialized certificate programs and lifetime CE credit storage set them apart from other online CE platforms.

6. Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society | Cost: $195 per year

The Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS) is a fantastic organization for veterinarians who specialize in emergency and critical care. It’s been around since 1978 and has thousands of members worldwide. Membership gets you access to all their resources:

  • A bimonthly journal, the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care
  • A website with access to educational resources, such as continuing education courses, case studies, and research articles
  • A mentorship program for new graduates
  • A variety of networking opportunities, such as annual conferences and regional meetings

VECCS is a valuable resource for ER veterinarians who are looking for continuing education, support, and networking opportunities. The society’s website is a great place to start your search for helpful online resources.

We hope this list is helpful to you! Go forth and expand your knowledge and skills so you can stay up-to-date with the constant flood of advancements in our industry.
