Finally! A compilation of veterinary resources for ER veterinarians!
What’s that?
Compilations already exist?
True—Cornell keeps a decent list and VIN even has a “Website of the Week.” But if you’re like me, you probably find most of these lists interesting yet overwhelming, with too many impractical options to sort through. So here’s a list specifically for ER veterinarians to bookmark for those questions you run into in practice every day.
1. VASG
vasg.org | Cost: Free
The Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia Support Group website is loaded. If you haven’t checked it out yet, they have great anesthesia and emergency drug calculators, a thorough guide to anesthesia, dose charts, and tons of other resources.
2. Pet Poison Helpline
petpoisonhelpline.com | Cost: Free
Overseen by the knowledgeable Dr. Justine Lee, the Pet Poison Helpline is quickly becoming the authority on pet poisons. They also offer great webinars if you are into that sort of thing. (Hint: You should be.)
When you get a call from your brother’s girlfriend’s aunt about her dog ingesting a cicada, you can tell her what’s up.
BONUS: While we’re on the topic of toxicology, don’t miss the excellent ASPCA Poisonous Plant Guide.
3. VetHive
vethive.com | Cost: $39 USD per month
When you need a little help from your friends, look no further than this enthusiastic veterinary community, where you can bounce cases off specialists and peers in a collaborative, judgment-free space. In VetHive, members can ask each other for case help, share experiences, and learn together through message boards, live workshops, and weekly RACE-approved CE courses.
